About the Gilbert White Network
The Gilbert White Network was launched on 3 June 2025 at the 'Gilbert White and his Contexts' conference which was held at Gilbert White's own house in Selborne. The network brings together academics, archivists, independent scholars, naturalists, and heritage providers working in both the sciences and the humanities to explore White's life and work in the light of new findings and methodologies, to encourage and develop new networks and collaborations between White scholars, and to explore opportunities for collaborative research and publication.
The network is managed by Brycchan Carey, Professor of English in the Department of Humanities at Northumbria University, Newcastle upon Tyne, and Stephanie Holt, UK Biodiversity Training Manager in the Centre for UK Nature at the Natural History Museum, London. We work in partnership with our colleagues at The Gilbert White House and Gardens in Selborne. Carey's role in the development of the network and the launch conference was supported by the British Academy and the Wolfson Foundation.
The network is exactly what it says it is - simply a network of like-minded people. There is no consitution, bank account, or committee. We fund the website ourselves and any events we organise are on a not-for-profit basis. We send out news and updates by email every few months or so. Anyone who is part of the network is welcome to let us know about their own events and publications which (if relevant) we will forward to the network or post to this website.
We welcome new members to the Gilbert White Network. There is no membership fee. All you have to do is provide us with your name and email address and we will add you to our mailing list. We do not use your email for anything other than let you know about events and publications relevant to Gilbert White's life and work and closely related contexts.
